Key Broke Off in the Lock

A broken key stuck in a lock means the cylinder is blocked – nothing goes in, nothing turns, and the door won’t open or lock until the fragment comes out. In almost every case, a locksmith can extract the broken piece without replacing the lock, and the job is usually done in under an hour. If the key snapped because the lock itself is damaged or the cylinder is worn, we address that at the same visit.

Call (682) 281-8985

The fragment is almost never as stuck as it looks. Locksmiths carry a small set of extraction tools – thin hooks and picks sized for standard and high-security cylinders – designed specifically for this. The problem feels catastrophic when it happens, but it is one of the more routine calls we get. What matters is not making it worse before we arrive.

Why It Happens

The key was already worn or had a hairline crack

Keys wear from the outside in. Every time a key slides into a cylinder, the ridges lose a fraction of a millimeter. A key that is visibly shiny along its cuts, thinner than a spare you keep in a drawer, or one that occasionally skipped a tumbler and needed a jiggle is a key that was close to failing. The break usually happens at the bow – the part you hold – or at the first cut near the shoulder, where flex stress concentrates every single time you turn it.

The lock cylinder is stiff or corroded

If the key required more force than usual to turn – especially in cold weather or after a long stretch of rain – the cylinder was fighting you. Brass pins seize when lubricant dries out, and steel components corrode when moisture gets in through a weathered door seal. The extra torque you applied to overcome that resistance put the key under load it wasn’t designed for, and something had to give. If the door faces the weather directly and the lock has never been serviced, this is the most likely culprit.

The lock was mid-pick or mid-bump when the key snapped

If the lock shows fresh scratches around the keyway – fine parallel marks on the face of the plug or the collar – someone may have forced entry before the key broke. A cylinder that has been picked or bumped sometimes has displaced pins that create uneven resistance, which is exactly the condition that snaps a key under normal turning force. If you notice these marks and weren’t expecting them, treat this as a security event, not just a broken key.

The wrong key was inserted with force

Keys for similar locks look almost identical. A Kwikset house key and a Schlage house key are close enough in width that one will enter the other’s cylinder partway before binding. If you or someone in your household tried a key that didn’t feel quite right and pushed anyway, the fragment will be seated at an odd angle, which complicates extraction slightly but doesn’t make it impossible. You’ll know this is likely if the key that broke wasn’t the one you normally use for that door.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop turning anything. If any part of the key is still protruding, the instinct is to grab it and twist. Don’t. Rotating a broken fragment pushes it deeper into the cylinder and can lodge it against the pins in a position that makes extraction harder.
  • Don’t poke anything into the keyway. Tweezers, a bobby pin, a flathead screwdriver – each of these can push the fragment further in or scratch the pin chambers, which can damage the cylinder beyond what extraction alone would fix.
  • Photograph the keyway before you touch it. A quick photo with your phone shows how far the fragment is in and whether it’s protruding. It also documents any scratches or damage that were already there, which is useful if you suspect an unauthorized entry attempt.
  • Check whether the bolt is extended or retracted. If the key broke mid-turn and the bolt is in a partially thrown position, tell us that when you call. It affects the extraction approach and whether we address the locking mechanism at the same visit.
  • Secure the space in the meantime. If the affected lock is your only way to secure a door, prop it, stay nearby, or ask someone to wait with you. A door that can’t be locked is a door that’s open to whoever tries it.

How We Fix It

When your local Loxley Locksmith and Security technician arrives, the first thing they do is look at the keyway under good light and assess how deep the fragment sits and which direction it’s oriented. Most extractions use a hook pick or a spiral extractor – a thin barbed tool that threads alongside the fragment and catches the cuts in the key so it can be drawn straight out without disturbing the pins.

If the fragment is flush with the face of the cylinder, the technician may need to tension the plug slightly before extraction. The whole process typically takes a few minutes when the fragment is cooperative. After the key is out, we test the cylinder with a working key to confirm it turns cleanly. If the cylinder is damaged or so worn that it contributed to the break, we discuss a rekey or a cylinder replacement on the spot – that falls under our Residential Locksmith service.
