Schlage Smart Lock Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We install Schlage smart locks across Los Angeles for $280-$520 installed, depending on the model and whether your door needs additional prep work. Most jobs are completed same-day, and we stock the full Schlage Connect, Encode, and Sense lines on our trucks. Homeowners usually call us after their lock starts eating batteries every two weeks, or after the motor strains but won’t fully extend the deadbolt - especially common in older Los Angeles homes where door frames have settled slightly out of square.
Which Schlage Models This Applies To
Schlage has three active smart lock families, and the installation approach differs for each. The Encode series (BE489, BE499) is WiFi-native with no hub required - popular in Silver Lake and Echo Park rentals where landlords want remote code management. The Connect (BE469, BE468) uses Z-Wave and pairs with SmartThings or Ring; we see these in Mid-Wilshire and Koreatown condo conversions. The older Sense (BE479) runs Bluetooth and is still common in Pasadena and Altadena homes from the mid-2010s.
Check the label inside the battery compartment for the six-digit model code starting with “BE.” The backset - the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore hole - is almost always 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ on Los Angeles residential doors, and Schlage ships with an adjustable latch to handle both. Where owners get stuck is the door thickness: standard Schlage smart locks fit 1-3/8″ to 1-3/4″ doors, but many 1920s Spanish Revival homes in Los Feliz and Hancock Park have 2-1/4″ solid core doors that need the Schlage thick door kit, which we carry. We install OEM Schlage hardware; we don’t use aftermarket smart lock equivalents because the firmware and security certifications don’t transfer.
Loxley Locksmith & Security is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Schlage.
Signs Your Schlage Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The motor runs but the deadbolt doesn’t extend fully. This usually means the strike plate is misaligned or the door has settled in the jamb. In Los Angeles, where winter rains swell wood frames and summer heat shrinks them, we see this seasonally in homes from the 1940s and 1950s.
- Battery life drops from six months to two weeks. The motor is working harder than it should, often because the bolt is dragging in a misaligned strike. Repeated failed attempts also drain power fast.
- The touchscreen is responsive but the lock won’t engage. This points to a failed clutch or gear train inside the lock body. On Schlage Connect models from 2016-2018, we replaced a batch with premature gear wear; the newer Encode design corrected this.
- The lock beeps and flashes red after entering a code. This is the low-battery warning, but if fresh batteries don’t fix it, the voltage regulator on the circuit board may be failing. Heat damage from direct afternoon sun on south-facing doors accelerates this in the San Fernando Valley.
- The lock works manually but not remotely. For Connect and Encode models, this is usually a network or hub issue, but we’ve also seen the Z-Wave or WiFi radio fail after power surges - common in older Los Angeles electrical panels without proper grounding.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range in Los Angeles |
|---|---|
| Schlage smart lock installation (standard door, no additional prep) | $280-$380 |
| Installation with door frame adjustment or strike relocation | $340-$450 |
| Thick door kit installation (doors over 1-3/4″) | $380-$520 |
| Removal and disposal of existing smart lock | Included |
What drives the range: door condition, whether the existing bore holes align with Schlage’s template, and if the strike needs to be moved or mortised deeper. We quote the full price on the phone before dispatching anyone, and that number matches the invoice. No call-out surcharge gets added when we arrive. Every installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise - parts and labor, and we come back at no charge if it fails.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a honest middle ground here. If you’re handy, you can check three things safely: confirm your door thickness, measure your backset, and verify your WiFi signal strength at the door (Encode needs -70 dBm or better). Schlage’s app walks through pairing cleanly.
Where DIY goes wrong: drilling new bore holes without a door lock installation jig, which throws off the deadbolt alignment and burns out the motor in months. Stripped mounting screws in a metal door that then need helicoil repair. And the electrical component - while Schlage smart locks are low-voltage, improper handling can damage the circuit board and void the warranty. If your door is older than 1960, has been rekeyed multiple times, or the existing deadbolt was ever forced, the internal mechanism may be damaged in ways you can’t see until the new lock is half-installed.

FAQs
Five to seven years is typical, though direct sun exposure and frequent use (rental properties, Airbnb units) can shorten that to three or four. Coastal salt air in Marina del Rey and San Pedro accelerates corrosion on the exterior escutcheon screws. Call (682) 281-8985 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Sometimes. If the issue is firmware or a drained capacitor, we can address it. But if the motor or gear train has failed, Schlage doesn’t sell internal replacement parts to locksmiths - the manufacturer considers the lock a sealed unit. We stock complete locks on our trucks and can swap same-day. Call (682) 281-8985 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Forty-five minutes to an hour for a standard replacement on a properly prepped door. If we need to adjust the strike or mortise the jamb deeper, plan on ninety minutes. We give you a real arrival window and keep it. Call (682) 281-8985 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Yes. We carry the Encode, Encode Plus, Connect, and Sense lines in matte black and satin nickel, the two finishes we see requested most in Los Angeles. If you need aged bronze or bright brass, we can have it next business day. Call (682) 281-8985 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Sam Rourke grew up in Eagle Rock and still lives about ten minutes from where he went to middle school. He picked up the fundamentals of the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, then spent years doing real-world work on everything from stripped deadbolts in Boyle Heights apartments to high-security commercial rekeying in downtown office buildings. He started Loxley because he was tired of watching neighbors get talked into hardware they didn’t need by guys who were out the door before the ink dried on the invoice. A good lock shouldn’t need a sales pitch.
Every Loxley job follows The Kingswell Way: we say the price before the work, show up in the window we gave, leave the place cleaner than we found it, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. We’ve operated since 2007 as part of the Kingswell family of locksmith companies. Our technicians are background-checked and uniformed, and a live person answers our phones 24/7.
