Kwikset Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Kwikset deadbolt installation in Los Angeles typically runs $140-$280 for a standard single-cylinder replacement, including the new hardware, labor, and cleanup. We stock Kwikset 660, 980, and SmartKey series deadbolts on our trucks, and most Los Angeles homes get same-day service. Most homeowners realize their deadbolt is failing when the key starts sticking on humid mornings or the thumb-turn grinds instead of throwing the bolt smoothly.
We’ve been installing Kwikset hardware across Los Angeles since 2007, from the original Craftsman bungalows in Highland Park to newer stucco tract homes in the Valley. The marine layer that rolls in overnight, especially west of the 405, leaves a fine salt residue on exterior hardware that accelerates wear inside the cylinder. That’s not a design flaw; it’s just local weather doing what it does.
Which Kwikset Models This Applies To
Kwikset has produced deadbolts under several series names over the past two decades, and the right replacement depends on what’s currently on your door.
- Kwikset 660 Series: The standard residential single-cylinder deadbolt. Look for “660” stamped on the round faceplate or the edge of the latch. Backset is typically 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ - we measure on-site before pulling a unit from the truck.
- Kwikset 980 Series: The SmartKey rekeyable deadbolt. Identifiable by the small slot next to the keyway (the SmartKey tool insertion point). These use a different internal sidebar mechanism than the 660; swapping a 980 for a 660 means losing rekeyability.
- Kwikset Signature Series / Contemporary: Higher-end finishes and rectangular faceplates. The bolt mechanism itself is often interchangeable with 660 internals, but the trim and strike plate geometry differ. We match finish in person - “Venetian Bronze” from 2019 doesn’t always match current production.
- Kwikset Powerbolt / SmartCode: Electronic keypad deadbolts. These require battery compartment clearance and specific door prep dimensions. Not every Los Angeles door from the 1950s has the 1-1/2″ diameter bore to accommodate the keypad housing without modification.
We carry both OEM Kwikset boxes and quality aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ANSI Grade 2 or Grade 3 standards. For rental properties in Los Angeles, we often recommend the aftermarket option - same function, lower parts cost, and we still back it with our 365-Day Done Right Promise. For homeowners who want the original packaging for resale value, we stock OEM.

Signs Your Kwikset Deadbolt Is Failing
- Key sticks or requires jiggling. The pin tumblers inside the cylinder are wearing unevenly, or the marine-layer moisture has started corrosion on the bottom pins. In coastal Los Angeles neighborhoods like Venice or San Pedro, we see this at 4-6 years instead of the 10+ you’d expect inland.
- Thumb-turn grinds or feels loose. The cam or tailpiece connecting the thumb-turn to the bolt mechanism is stripping. On Kwikset units, this often starts as a soft click before becoming a full spin with no bolt movement.
- Bolt doesn’t fully extend into the strike plate. Either the bolt itself is warping from heat exposure (south-facing doors in the San Fernando Valley take the worst of this) or the door has settled and the strike alignment has shifted. We check both before quoting.
- SmartKey rekeying fails or the key spins freely. The sidebar in SmartKey cylinders can jam if rekeyed incorrectly or if debris enters the slot. This isn’t user-error in every case - we’ve seen factory defects in batches from 2021-2022.
- Visible corrosion or pitting on the exterior. Once the finish is compromised, the underlying zinc alloy degrades faster than you’d think. We’ve replaced deadbolts in Mar Vista where the exterior looked rough but the internals were fine, and others in Silver Lake where the outside looked okay but the cylinder was seized solid.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Typical Range in Los Angeles |
|---|---|
| Standard Kwikset 660 single-cylinder deadbolt (installed) | $140 - $195 |
| Kwikset 980 SmartKey deadbolt (installed) | $175 - $240 |
| Kwikset electronic deadbolt (Powerbolt/SmartCode) | $220 - $340 |
| Door prep modification (bore enlargement, strike relocation) | $45 - $85 additional |
| Rekeying existing Kwikset to match new key | $18 - $28 per cylinder |
The range depends on three things: which Kwikset series you choose, whether your door needs prep work, and if we’re rekeying to match existing house keys. We quote the full price on the phone before dispatching anyone - that’s the price on the invoice. No call-out surcharge gets added when we arrive.
Every installation includes the deadbolt, strike plate with screws, labor, cleanup, and our written 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the mechanism fails, the finish peels prematurely, or the rekey doesn’t hold, we come back and fix it at no charge. Sam Rourke started Loxley because he was tired of watching neighbors get talked into hardware they didn’t need by guys who were out the door before the ink dried on the invoice. A good lock shouldn’t need a sales pitch.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a honest middle ground here. A homeowner with a screwdriver and patience can usually remove two mounting screws, pull the old deadbolt, and install a new one from the hardware store. Where DIY goes wrong: the backset measurement (2-3/8″ vs. 2-3/4″ - Kwikset adjustable latches exist but have their own failure modes), strike plate alignment with the door jamb, and the SmartKey rekeying sequence if you’re trying to match existing keys. We’ve been called to Los Angeles homes where the new deadbolt was installed upside-down, where the latch was forced into a misaligned bore and cracked the housing, or where the SmartKey sidebar was permanently jammed on the first rekey attempt.
If you’re comfortable measuring twice and following the printed instructions, DIY is viable for a basic 660 swap. If your door is older, the strike plate doesn’t line up, or you’re dealing with a SmartKey or electronic unit, the cost of a botched install usually exceeds what we’d have charged to do it right the first time. FAQs
On the coast, expect 5-8 years before you notice wear; inland in drier neighborhoods, 10-15 years is common. The marine layer accelerates corrosion on exterior finishes and can eventually reach internal components. Call (682) 281-8985 if yours is showing early signs - estimates are free.
Sometimes. A sticky cylinder can often be cleaned and repinned; a loose thumb-turn might need a new tailpiece. But if the bolt is warped, the housing is cracked, or the SmartKey mechanism is jammed, replacement is more reliable and usually more cost-effective than chasing intermittent failures. We assess on-site and tell you straight which path makes sense.
A straightforward replacement on a standard prepped door takes 20-35 minutes. If we need to enlarge the bore, relocate the strike, or match finish with existing hardware, plan on 45-60 minutes. We give you a real arrival window and stick to it - that’s part of The Kingswell Way.
Yes. We carry 660 and 980 series in the most common finishes - satin nickel, polished brass, and Venetian bronze - plus select SmartCode electronic units. For less common finishes or the Signature Series contemporary line, we can source same-day from our Los Angeles supplier or schedule installation for the following day. Call (682) 281-8985 to confirm what’s in stock for your specific model.
