Medeco Deadbolt Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Medeco deadbolts across Los Angeles, with most residential installations running $280-$480 including the cylinder, strike hardware, and labor. Same-day installation is available in most Los Angeles neighborhoods when you call before 2 p.m. Most homeowners realize their Medeco deadbolt needs attention when the key starts catching at 10 o’clock, the thumb turn grinds, or the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike - usually after years of smooth operation in our dry, dusty climate.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco deadbolts fall into three main residential series you’ll see in Los Angeles homes: the classic Medeco Maxum (the heavy brass single-cylinder deadbolt most common in pre-2010 installations), the Medeco 11* series (slimmer profile, often found in condos and multi-family units around Koreatown and Mid-Wilshire), and the newer Medeco X4 (a pin-tumbler system with sidebar, popular in retrofit jobs where homeowners want key control without replacing the entire door prep).
Here’s how to identify yours: the Maxum has a thick, rounded faceplate and the Medeco name stamped vertically on the thumb-turn housing. The 11* series carries a smaller, flatter escutcheon with the series number etched near the keyway. The X4 typically has a more modern, squared-off design and will say “X4” above the cylinder.
We stock OEM Medeco cylinders and full deadbolt assemblies on our Los Angeles service trucks. For the Maxum, we also carry a quality aftermarket equivalent that meets the same ANSI Grade 1 standard and uses the same door prep - it costs about 15% less and carries our same 365-day guarantee. For the 11* and X4, we stick with OEM; the sidebar tolerances are tight enough that aftermarket versions we’ve tested don’t consistently meet Medeco’s spec.
Signs Your Medeco Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- The key sticks or requires jiggling at specific positions. In Los Angeles, this usually means dust and fine grit have worked into the pin chamber, or the sidebar is wearing against its slot. Medeco’s angled cuts make them more sensitive to contamination than standard Schlage or Kwikset cylinders. If you’re using graphite lubricant, stop - it turns to paste in our dry heat and makes it worse.
- The thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t move. The tailpiece connecting your interior thumb turn to the bolt mechanism has either cracked or slipped its set screw. On Maxum installations older than 12 years, we’ve seen the zinc alloy tailpiece fatigue from repeated use in south-facing doors where daily thermal expansion stresses the metal.
- The bolt extends only partially or binds in the strike plate. This is often door settlement in older Los Angeles homes - particularly in hillside neighborhoods like Echo Park or Mount Washington - but it can also mean the bolt itself is bent from forced entry attempts or the internal cam is worn. A full deadbolt replacement solves both.
- The cylinder spins freely when you insert the key. The set screws holding the cylinder in the housing have backed out, or the housing threads are stripped. This happens more with Medeco than other brands because the brass housing is softer than the steel mounting screws - a design trade-off for corrosion resistance that becomes a failure point after 15+ years.
- You’ve lost key control - copies exist you didn’t authorize. Medeco’s whole value is restricted key duplication. If a previous homeowner, tenant, or contractor had keys copied without your knowledge, rekeying is cheaper than full replacement. But if the cylinder itself is worn past spec, installing a new Medeco deadbolt with fresh key control is the only way to reset your security.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In the Los Angeles market, installing a new Medeco deadbolt typically runs:
| Medeco Maxum single-cylinder (OEM, installed) | $340-$480 |
| Medeco Maxum single-cylinder (aftermarket equivalent, installed) | $280-$380 |
| Medeco 11* series single-cylinder (OEM, installed) | $320-$440 |
| Medeco X4 single-cylinder (OEM, installed) | $360-$500 |
| Additional door prep or strike adjustment | $40-$85 |
That price includes the deadbolt assembly, cylinder with two keys, strike plate and hardware, removal of your old deadbolt, installation, testing, and cleanup. We quote the full price on the phone before we dispatch - that’s the price on the invoice, period. No “trip charge” gets added at the door.
Every Medeco installation we do in Los Angeles carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: parts and labor, and if anything fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. We put that in writing before we start the work.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check whether your issue is just a loose set screw or a strike plate that needs adjustment - that’s reasonable owner-level work. But installing a Medeco deadbolt correctly requires precise door prep: the backset must be exactly 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″ (Medeco tolerances are tighter than Kwikset), the face bore needs to be centered and clean, and the strike mortise must align within 1/16″ or the bolt will bind and wear prematurely.
We’ve been called to Los Angeles homes where a homeowner installed the deadbolt upside-down (the thumb turn rotates the wrong direction), where the cylinder was set too shallow and the key won’t fully insert, or where the bolt was forced into a misaligned strike until it bent. A good lock shouldn’t need a sales pitch - but it does need proper installation to work as designed.

FAQs
In Los Angeles conditions - dry heat, occasional Santa Ana dust, and strong UV on south-facing doors - a properly installed Medeco Maxum typically lasts 15-20 years before the cylinder mechanism shows wear. The exterior finish may fade faster; we see brass tarnishing in coastal neighborhoods like Venice and San Pedro within 8-10 years, though function isn’t affected. Call (682) 281-8985 if you’re unsure whether yours is due - estimates are free.
Sometimes. A sticking key or loose cylinder can often be fixed with cleaning, lubrication, or set-screw adjustment. But a worn sidebar, cracked tailpiece, or bent bolt means replacement - those are structural failures that repair won’t reliably solve. We always check repairability first; if replacement is needed, we’ll show you why before quoting. Call (682) 281-8985 for an exact assessment.
A straightforward Medeco deadbolt swap in a standard wood door takes 45-60 minutes. If your door needs new prep, the old holes are oversized, or we’re converting from a different backset, plan on 90 minutes to two hours. We give you a real arrival window and stick to it - that’s part of The Kingswell Way.
Yes. We carry Maxum, 11*, and X4 single-cylinder deadbolts in our most common finishes - satin nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, and polished brass. For double-cylinder or less common finishes, we can usually have it next business day or source it same-day from our supplier in the San Fernando Valley. Call (682) 281-8985 to confirm availability for your specific model.
