Medeco Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
Medeco lock rekeying in Los Angeles typically costs $45-$85 per cylinder and can be completed same-day when you call before 2 PM. We stock Medeco key pins, sidebar components, and factory-spec blanks on our trucks, so most residential and commercial rekeys are finished in a single visit without ordering parts. If your Medeco key is sticking, turning roughly, or you’ve got a tenant or employee who shouldn’t have access anymore, rekeying changes the internal pin combination so old keys no longer work - without replacing the entire lock.
Most Los Angeles owners realize they need a Medeco rekey in one of three moments: after a move-in when the previous owner handed over keys they later admitted were copied, after a staffing change at a commercial property in the Arts District or Culver City, or when the key starts catching at 10 o’clock and they realize the cylinder hasn’t been serviced since the building went up in the 1980s. We’ve rekeyed Medeco cylinders in Hancock Park bungalows, DTLA loft conversions, and commercial suites from Santa Monica to Pasadena - the symptoms are usually the same, but the right fix depends on which Medeco series you’re working with.
Which Medeco Models This Applies To
Medeco has produced several distinct cylinder lines over the decades, and the rekeying approach differs for each. The original Medeco Biaxial, still common in older Los Angeles commercial buildings, uses angled pin tumblers with a sidebar that interacts with a rotating pin design. The Medeco M3 introduced a slider mechanism alongside the traditional sidebar, adding a third layer of key control. The newer Medeco X4, often found in recent residential installations around Silver Lake and Los Feliz, uses a conventional pin-tumbler layout with Medeco’s proprietary keyway but without the angled cuts. Then there’s the Medeco KeyMark, a utility-grade cylinder that looks similar but lacks the UL 437 high-security rating.
We identify the series by keyway shape, cylinder face markings, and the presence of a sidebar slot visible when the plug is turned to 90 degrees. Biaxial keys have that distinctive staggered biaxial cut; M3 keys add a small dimple near the bow. For rekeying, we match factory-original pins and sidebar components - we don’t substitute generic pins in a Medeco cylinder because the tolerances are too tight and the sidebar won’t seat properly. We also stock genuine Medeco key blanks; aftermarket blanks for high-security keyways are a gamble we don’t take. If your lock is marked “Medeco Original,” “Medeco M3,” or “Medeco X4,” we can rekey it. KeyMark cylinders can be rekeyed too, though they’re often more economical to replace if the hardware is worn.
Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing
- Key requires jiggling or repeated insertion to turn. This usually means the pin chambers have accumulated grit from Los Angeles’s dry, dusty air - particularly common near construction zones in Downtown or the Arts District - or the sidebar springs are weakening and not returning the sidebar to full engagement.
- Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. The tailpiece or cam connecting the cylinder to the locking mechanism may be worn, or the cylinder itself has shifted in the housing due to loose mounting screws. This isn’t always a rekeying issue, but we check it during every service call because a rekeyed cylinder with a failing tailpiece is a lock that still won’t work.
- Key works in one direction (locking) but not the other (unlocking). This points to uneven pin wear, often from a heavy key ring hanging on the key and torquing the plug slightly out of alignment. In Medeco cylinders, this can also indicate a sidebar that’s binding on one side.
- Recent key copies don’t work smoothly. If your original Medeco key operates fine but a hardware-store copy is sticky, the duplicator likely used a standard key blank instead of a Medeco-specific one, or the angles on a Biaxial cut were rounded off. Medeco’s angled cuts require a specialized duplicator; we carry one on the truck.
- You need to restrict access but don’t know how many keys are in circulation. This is the most common reason we get called for Medeco rekeying in Los Angeles rental properties - a previous tenant, property manager, or contractor may have copied keys, and Medeco’s restricted keyways are only effective if you control the key blanks. Rekeying resets that control.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Medeco rekeying in Los Angeles runs $45-$85 per cylinder for residential Biaxial and X4 models, and $75-$140 for commercial M3 cylinders with sidebar and slider reconfiguration. The range depends on cylinder quantity, whether we need to repin the sidebar as well as the pin stack, and if new factory key blanks are included. Commercial master-key systems add $25-$40 per level of master keying. We quote the full price on the phone before dispatching a technician, and that written quote is the price on the invoice - no arrival surcharge, no “it took longer than expected” add-on.
Every Medeco rekey includes: removal and disassembly of the cylinder, complete repinning with factory-spec components, sidebar inspection and spring replacement if needed, new keys cut to factory angles on a Medeco duplicator, reassembly and function testing, and lubrication with a graphite-free compound that won’t gum up in LA’s heat. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the rekey fails or a key stops working within a year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, not offered as an upgrade.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a honest split here. A homeowner with patience and a pinning kit can repin a standard Kwikset or Schlage - those are straightforward pin-tumbler designs with widely available specs. Medeco is different. The angled pins in a Biaxial cylinder must be oriented correctly in three dimensions, not just at the right height. The sidebar requires specific spring tension and proper seating in machined grooves. Get one pin angle wrong and the cylinder won’t turn; seat the sidebar incorrectly and you’ve got a lock that works until it doesn’t, usually at 11 PM.
What you can safely check: whether the keyway is visibly obstructed, whether the cylinder mounting screws are tight, and whether the problem follows one key or all keys. What we don’t recommend: disassembling the cylinder yourself, attempting to file or modify pins, or using aftermarket blanks from an uncertified source. We’ve been called to Los Angeles homes where a DIY rekey attempt turned a $75 service call into a $200 cylinder replacement because the sidebar groove was damaged. FAQs
A properly rekeyed Medeco cylinder should last 10-15 years under normal residential use in Los Angeles, though commercial buildings with high traffic may need pin replacement at 5-7 years. The dry climate here is actually easier on lock internals than humid coastal environments, but dust from Santa Ana wind events can accelerate wear if the cylinder isn’t periodically cleaned. Call (682) 281-8985 if your key is starting to catch - catching early prevents chamber damage.
Sometimes. If the pin chambers are worn oversize or the sidebar groove is damaged, repinning won’t restore proper function and we recommend cylinder replacement. We inspect for this during every rekey and tell you before we start if replacement is the smarter path. Call (682) 281-8985 and we’ll give you both options with prices for each.
Most single-cylinder Medeco rekeys take 20-40 minutes on site, including removal, repinning, key cutting, and reinstallation. Commercial master-key systems with multiple cylinders typically run 45-90 minutes. We schedule arrival windows, not vague “sometime today” promises, and we call when we’re en route. Call (682) 281-8985 to book a window that works for you.
Yes - we carry Medeco factory pins, sidebar springs, and certified key blanks for Biaxial, M3, and X4 cylinders on every Los Angeles service vehicle. For discontinued Medeco Original cylinders, we maintain a supply of compatible pins from our Kingswell network inventory. If we don’t have it, we don’t charge a return trip - but in 17 years, that’s been rare. Call (682) 281-8985 to confirm availability for your specific model.
