Sargent Lock Rekeying: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We rekey Sargent locks same-day across Los Angeles for $45-$85 per cylinder, including new pins, labor, and testing. Most residential jobs with 2-4 locks finish inside an hour. Commercial Sargent 10-line or 6300-series hardware with master-key systems runs $75-$150 per cylinder depending on pinning complexity.

Most Los Angeles owners figure out they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a staffing change at their business. Sometimes it’s subtler: a key that used to turn smooth starts catching, or you realize too many copies are floating around from the previous tenant. We’ve done rekeys in Silver Lake bungalows after Airbnb turnovers, and in downtown high-rises where the property manager needs every office on a new master system by Monday.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent’s product line splits into residential and commercial grades, and the rekeying approach differs for each. On the residential side, we regularly rekey the 6600 and 6700 series deadbolts and entry sets found in Los Angeles condos and courtyard apartments. These use standard Schlage-compatible keyways in many cases, though older Sargent Keso and 6300 small-format interchangeable cores need specialized pinning kits we carry on our vans.

Commercial hardware is where Sargent built its reputation. The 10-line cylindrical locks, 8200 mortise series, and 6300 SFIC cores dominate Los Angeles office buildings, schools, and medical facilities. Identifying your model starts with the faceplate: 10-line levers and knobs carry a small “SARGENT” stamp near the cylinder housing; mortise locks have a model plate inside the door edge when you swing it open. The cylinder itself will show either “LA” (for standard Sargent keyway) or “LC” (for interchangeable core prep).

We stock genuine Sargent pinning kits and also carry LAB and HPC aftermarket equivalents that match OEM tolerances. For master-keyed systems, we stick with factory-original pins - the shear-line tolerances on Sargent master wafers are tight, and aftermarket variance can cause intermittent failure that doesn’t show up until two weeks later. For single-key residential rekeys, quality aftermarket pins save you money without the risk.

Signs Your Sargent Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • Key sticks or requires jiggling to turn. Worn pins develop flat spots where the key contacts them, or accumulated grit from Los Angeles’s dusty Santa Ana season works into the cylinder. A rekey replaces all pins and gives you a fresh start with clean tolerances.
  • Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. This usually means the tailpiece or cam has worn out of alignment with the cylinder, not the pins themselves. We check this before quoting - if the internal mechanism is failing, rekeying alone won’t fix it and we’ll tell you upfront.
  • You’ve lost track of who has copies. In Los Angeles rental markets, keys pass through cleaners, dog walkers, contractors, and former roommates. Rekeying is the only way to guarantee old keys stop working without replacing the entire lock.
  • Different keys operate the same lock intermittently. Master-key systems can develop “ghost keying” when wear creates accidental shear lines. We’ve seen this in older Sargent 10-line hardware in Koreatown office buildings where decades of master levels have accumulated.
  • You’re rekeying repeatedly within a year. If you’ve had us out twice for the same lock, the cylinder may be out-of-spec or the wrong key blank was used originally. We measure cylinder bore diameter and check for lateral play - Sargent specs call for .005″ maximum tolerance, and worn housings exceed that.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range in Los Angeles
Residential Sargent rekey (per cylinder) $45 - $85
Commercial Sargent 10-line rekey $65 - $110
Sargent SFIC / Keso core rekey $75 - $150
Master-key system setup (per level) $35 - $60 additional
After-hours or emergency rekey $95 - $140

What drives the range: cylinder type, whether we need to disassemble the lock from the door, and if you’re adding master-key capability. Every rekey includes new bottom pins, top pins, springs, a new key set (typically 2 keys), cylinder cleaning and lubrication, and reinstallation with strike-plate adjustment if needed. We quote the full price on the phone before dispatching - that’s the price on the invoice, with no call-out surcharge added when we arrive. Every rekey carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the key stops working or the cylinder binds within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Rekeying a Sargent cylinder is straightforward in theory and easy to botch in practice. If you’re mechanically inclined, you can remove the cylinder from the door using the set screw on the lock edge - but the moment you dump those pins onto your kitchen table, you’re committed. Sargent uses different pin diameters across series (.115″ for standard, .098″ for some SFIC applications), and mixing them destroys the cylinder. The springs are under light tension and launch across the room if you’re not using a pinning tray.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself: confirm the set screw is tight, try graphite lubricant if the key sticks, and verify you’re using the correct key blank (Sargent “LA” keyway blanks are not interchangeable with Schlage SC1). If the cylinder needs to come apart, the risk of losing parts or installing pins at wrong heights outweighs the cost savings for most Los Angeles homeowners. We’ve had calls from Echo Park and Pasadena where the DIY attempt turned a $65 rekey into a $200 cylinder replacement.

A good lock shouldn’t need a sales pitch. If you’d rather have it done right the first time, call us at (682) 281-8985 and we’ll give you a written price before anyone heads your way.
